For advanced users with expert knowledge only:
Choosing the right category is difficult. If you have industry experience or are a researcher in some of the above areas, you are invited to suggest the categories for a job
you wish to publish or generally suggest changes in the above list. But please first read our comments below:
General Remarks:
- If the requirements say, for example: "Bsc in Math, Physics, Computer Science" it does NOT mean that the job should be posted in Mathjobs, Teslajobs and Turingjobs. Our doctrine is: "where does the person go to", and not "where does person come from." However, exceptions are made due to the interdisciplinary nature of jobs with Nobeljobs and Teslajobs.
- If, for example, the job location is in Switzerland and you want to hire people from Germany, the job is posted on Swiss sites and not on German sites because, again, our doctrine is is: "where does the person go to", and not "where does the person come from."
- Jobs are always posted on the country site where the job is located and on the international site. In the EU- and EFTA-Europe, jobs are additionally posted at our .eu sites.
- Summary is provided by us and contains information only (not publicity). And suggestions are welcome.
Details (concerning several categories):
- Jobs in hospitals, state research institutions, non-profit organizations, most governmental agencies, cooperations between academic and private world are usually posted free of charge in academic categories and in categories of the private sector (exception: theoretical PhD-Studentships); these institutions are:
- Austria: Software Competence Center Hagenberg GmbH
- Belgium: VITO
- France: all national Labs, CEA, CNES, ESRF
- Germany: Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DLR, DWD, EMBL, Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, Fraunhofer, Helmholtz Zentrum, MPI
- Portugal: INESC Porto, Instituto de Telecomunicações
- Spain: ICFO
- Switzerland: Eawag, Empa, PSI
- UK: EMBL
- U.S.: all national Labs, NASA, NIH
- Civil Engineering jobs at universities where job is to do civil engineering work for the university itself are only posted in the private sector.
- Jobs at universities that include teaching are not posted in the private sector.
- Jobs at universities that do not differ much from jobs in the private sector might be posted both in the academic and private sector.
- Administrational jobs in the academic world are posted in General Management and if research and teaching is included (or for very high positions (incl Dean, Provost)) then also in the appropriate academic categories.
- SAP-Jobs in private sector in business sw und it-mgmt.
- Jobs in Nuclear Power Plants (Safety) and so in selection of AP, PI, MechAero, Nuke, ocic&pc, CE, R&D, ProdEng
- Pattern Recognition in theory & signal.
- Sport in "medi" and "civil and other eng a"
- SW Eng in business sw (private sector); in base, maybe also info (acad sector).
- Bio and Med jobs with heavy stats in Math-jobs, with heavy IT in Turing-jobs (signal), with heavy Bio in Nobel-jobs (if acad: lifescience and bc), or combination of all 3.
- Genetics and Bioinfo if acad always in lifescience AND bc.
- Mechatronics in el and mechaero eng; but if it only says: "Mecheng or Mechatronics", then Mechaero and if it only says: "ElEng or Mechatronics", then only in Eleng
- "Computational Sciences" can be in several categories from na, stochas, dollar and categories within Tesla and Nobel - depending on details of job description.
- Energy-Jobs can be any combination of el, mechaero, civil, physics (pi, ap).
- Nanotechnology can be any site.
- "Applied Math" is in na, stochas and dollar if no further information given.
- See here for tipps on where to put Physics jobs; open window "[show]" for even more details.
How do we choose the level:
There are 3 different levels, with different meanings in the academic and private sector:
- Students
- academic sector: Bachelor/Master-Thesis; Student-Assistant
- private sector: Internships/Praktika
- Junior
- academic sector: PhD-Studentships
- private sector: professionals with 0-2 y exp
- Experienced
- academic sector: Postdoc, Lecturers and higher
- private sector: professionals with 2+ y exp
Remarks:
- Jobs for Students (up to Master) in the industry (Banks, Pharma, industrial corporations) are only posted in the private sector in the level "Students"
- Bachelor/Master-Thesis in the private industry are posted in the academic and private sector in the level "Students"
- All further jobs that are posted in the academic and private sector (hospitals, state research institutions, NGO's, most governmental agencies, see above for more) are posted
according to the following rules:
- Jobs for Students (up to Master) are posted in the academic and private sector in the level "Students"
- Bachelor/Master-Thesis are posted in the academic sector in the level "Students"
- PhD-Positions are posted in the academic sector in the level "Junior" and if applied area of reseach in private sector too
- Scientist with possibility of doing a PhD are posted in the level "Junior" and "Experienced" in the academic and private sector
- Postdoc Positions in those institutions are posted in the academic and private sector in the levels "Junior" and "Experienced"
Internal Policy:
- First Math-jobs (MJ), then Tesla-jobs (TeJ), then Turing-jobs (TuJ), then Nobel-jobs (NJ) on all Sites, Mailinglists, internal Docus
- MJ=Maths & Stats, TeJ=Physics & Engineering, TuJ=Computer Science, NJ=Life Science, Medicine & Chemistry
- We do "Science, IT and Engineering", little longer: "Mathematics, Statistics, Science, IT and Engineering"
