EUROPEAN SYNCHROTON RADIATION FACILITY
INSTALLATION EUROPEENNE DE RAYONNEMENT SYNCHROTRON

The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 19 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.

Within the Experiments Division, the X-Ray Imaging group is now seeking to recruit a:

POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW (M/F)
for the ID22 beamline

ID22 is an undulator beamline dedicated to hard X-ray micro-analysis consisting of the combination of X-ray fluorescence, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, diffraction and 2D/3D X-ray imaging techniques in a broad energy range (6-70 keV).

T H E   F U N C T I O N

You will participate in ongoing in-house research programmes, the running of the Beamline and providing support to external users as local contact.
In particular, you will join in the effort of the group to upgrade the performance of the experimental end-stations and to develop experimental techniques. Two stations are clearly identified by the spatial resolution: a microprobe devoted to micro-spectroscopy and a nanoprobe used for nano-imaging. Both stations are applied to bio-medicine, materials, Earth and environmental sciences. These disciplines seek for non-destructive investigation of the spatial distribution, concentration and speciation of trace elements to be correlated to the morphology and crystallographic orientations at the micrometer and nanometer levels. Innovative programmes on X-ray computed tomography and fluorescence–based techniques for chemical imaging are under development. You will also be encouraged to develop your own research projects, which should exploit the unique beamline capabilities (for further information about the instrument/instrumentation, please go to the following link on our website: www.esrf.fr/UsersAndScience/Experiments/Imaging/ID22/).

Q U A L I F I C A T I O N S   A N D   E X P E R I E N C E

You must hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in physics, biology, geology or a related discipline. Previous experience in X-ray imaging techniques is requested. Aptitudes in instrumentation are highly desirable. Background in nanoscience and/or experience in data processing and analysis will be considered an asset.
